Don't Abuse The System

So it's come of light recently about something that pharmacies do, it's called the 'Minor Ailments Scheme', here is a quote from the NHS website which explains what it is;

"Some pharmacies run a minor ailment scheme, which means they can supply medicines for certain conditions on the NHS.
If your pharmacy runs a minor ailment scheme that includes eczema, for example, it means your pharmacist can supply medicines for this condition and you'll only pay the standard prescription charge.
If you're exempt from paying prescription charges – because you're under 16 or over 60, for example, or you have a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) – you won't pay for the medicine. Just ask at your local pharmacy."

Now not every pharmacy runs this but the that do will usually make sure your child is with you to see the problem they have to make sure you are not lying or bluffing or whatever, it is not a free ride for you to stock up on Calpol or any other medicine that you want to stock up on in your cabinet at home.
I am scared about this scheme, I think it's a fantastic thing to have in our country but there is always going to be people who abuse it.
Our family luckily will never have to use this scheme, £3 for a bottle of medicine that the kids would need isn't a lot of money to us, not that I'm saying we are well off, but if we had to choose between a dessert for after dinner or a bottle of say, Calpol then we'd choose the Calpol for our children any day.
But I know people who would always choose cigarettes, booze or things for themselves knowing they could get medicine for free any day and that's the problem I have with this scheme.
I just know it's going to and probably already has been abused, which then means if it continues like that then it's probably going to stop and those who actually NEED it won't be able to use it in the future and then those children are going to suffer, not even only children, the elderly too.

So I would like to ask everyone out there; PLEASE do NOT use this scheme unless you HAVE to.
Look at your shopping trolly, do you really need that little treat in there? Could you not just go without it for a week and just buy the medicine? Can you be selfless for just once?
Don't ruin it for others. Please.

  1. I totally agree with you, for the sake of the money for a bottle. For the sake of a bottle of fizzy pop or a bar of chocolate - or even the bus fare into town I would walk and buy the calpol. I hope this scheme is kept for the people who need it, so that children don't have to do without, but that there is some way to ensure that it is not abused. The NHS is a wonderful thing and we need to do everything we can to make sure that there is an NHS for our children and grandchildren!

  2. I completely agree with your standpoint. We need to protect our NHS, it is an amazing institution of which we should be proud. I unfortunately am a single mummy who receives disability benefit and I even wouldn't take advantage of this. I choose not to have sky, go out, eat take aways etc
